Filippino Lippi, The Crucifixion of St. Philip

1487-1503
Fresco
Strozzi Chapel, Santa Maria Novella, Florence

According to most of the legends St. Philip was crucified by pagans in the city of Hierapolis in Phrygia. One of the legends Acta Sanctorum says an earthquake followed the saint's death (May vol. 1, 14). That may be the point of the broken columns in the fresco.
